What is an Abuse Claim?

We understand how immensely difficult it can be to, firstly, come to terms with what has happened and, secondly, to take the necessary actions to seek justice for the crime.

An abuse claim is a legal process that allows a survivor to seek recognition of the harm they have suffered and to hold those responsible to account. It may involve a claim against an individual, an organisation, or a public body that directly carried out the abuse or failed in their duty to protect you.

Abuse claims can provide compensation for the physical, psychological and emotional impact of the abuse, as well as access to support, rehabilitation and a sense of justice through the civil courts. Abuse is any action that causes significant harm or distress to another person.

There are many different types of abuse including physical, emotional, psychological, financial and sexual abuse, as well as neglect and exploitation. Abuse can happen anywhere: at home, in a public place, by a position of authority, at a hospital or care home, at school or even at work.

How long does it take?

Our proactive approach ensures that claims progress swiftly and efficiently without delay. The typical duration can range widely depending on the complexity of the case and whether it is contested. If the claim is straightforward and settled early, it may be resolved within 6 to 12 months. However, if the case proceeds to trial, it can take 18 to 36 months from the initial filing to final judgment. Book a call or send a message to one of our abuse claims solicitors to find out more.

Client Journeys

Our client was sexually abused by a teacher at Clifton College. As a pupil in the late 1980s at both the Preparatory and Upper Schools, our client was groomed with special treatment and praise, including being made to sit on the teacher’s knee during lessons. The abuse continued over four years and after our client left Clifton College, with the teacher maintaining contact and continuing the abuse. We successfully pursued the claim by arguing that Clifton College was responsible for the abuse, as it had been committed by one of their teachers.
