Cycling helmets Bill for children fails to get second reading

The Liberal Democrat MP, Annette Brooke has failed in her attempt to introduce a law that would have made it mandatory for children under 14 years to wear helmets. The proposed legislation The Cycles (Protective Headgear for Children) Bill 2010-11 will now have little chance of making progress after it failed to receive a second reading last week in Parliament. As a result thousands of child cyclists will be at risk of suffering serious brain injuries in cycling accidents. In the UK, helmets are compulsory for children horse riding, why not children cycling? Whilst I’m not surprised by the outcome, I am disappointed because the evidence is clear that helmets are effective in reducing brain injuries.
