BBK dons purple socks for solidarity with disabled people

If you come across one of our team today, you might catch a glimpse of a colourful ankle or two.

That’s because our Brain Injury division has proudly joined Parallel’s Purple Sock Campaign for the International Day of Disabled People.

At Bolt Burdon Kemp, we’re passionate about raising awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities and promoting inclusion and so it was only right we joined UK disability inclusion charity Parallel’s campaign. The simple act of buying and wearing Parallel’s purple socks today aims to show solidarity and spark conversations about the barriers people with disabilities face.

Money raised from the sale of Parallel’s socks will go to the British Association for Supported Employment (BASE) – a leading voice that represents disabled workers.

Workplace challenges are a key area of focus for Parallel and we see the problems people come across when trying to rebuild their lives after injury.

Barriers to work

Many individuals with disabilities, especially brain injuries, struggle to return to their previous jobs. This might be due to cognitive impairments, physical limitations, communication barriers, or a lack of supportive employers.

Losing the ability to work in a familiar role can significantly impact self-esteem, identity, and social connections, often leading to isolation.

In my colleague Rebecca Hanmore’s blog, you can read more about returning to work after a brain injury.

For young people with special educational needs (SEN), the journey into the workplace can be equally challenging with potential obstacles stemming from physical, cognitive, or societal factors.

These barriers can make it difficult to secure employment, despite the individual’s talents and potential. For more insights, my colleague and head of our Brain Injury Division, Caroline Klage, shares valuable tips in her podcast on supporting SEN students entering the workplace, including guidance on government-supported employment initiatives.

At Bolt Burdon Kemp, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to live, work, and thrive in a society that values equality. That’s why we partner with charities and initiatives that champion disability rights, such as Cerebra, one of our long-standing charity partners.

In summer 2025, our Child Brain Injury team will participate in Cerebra’s Relay Your Way event, raising funds and awareness for children with brain injuries and their families.

Stay tuned to our website and social platforms for updates on these events. Together, through campaigns like Purple Sock and Relay Your Way, we can take meaningful steps toward a more inclusive society.
