Heart surgeon Amal Bose charged with sexual assaults against staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital

A senior heart surgeon has been charged with 14 counts of sexual assault against women at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Amal Bose, 54, who was formerly head of the cardiovascular surgery department, is alleged to have assaulted six women, who were all members of staff, between 2017 and 2022.

Blackpool Victoria Hospital contacted Lancashire Police in 2023 following allegations of sexual assault on Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust employees. Bose was made subject to conditions to his licence to practice by the General Medical Council and suspended from the hospital whilst the police investigations were ongoing.

Bose was subsequently charged with offences against his colleagues on 24 May 2024. The surgeon has been released on bail and is due to appear at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court on 7 June 2024.

A civil claim for compensation against the relevant employer and/or NHS Trust may arise in circumstances where a medical practitioner commits sexual assaults in the context of their employment.

A civil claim for compensation may enable survivors to access funding for therapy and losses as a result of abuse they have experienced.
