Sam joined Bolt Burdon Kemp in May 2024, as a Senior Associate in the Costs department. He is an experienced Solicitor and advocate, specialising in cost disputes since 2007, acting for both receiving and paying parties upon a wide range of complex and high value litigation.

Sam predominantly deals with inter partes costs arising from catastrophic personal injury and high value complex clinical negligence litigation. He has substantial advocacy experience at detailed assessment having represented a wide range of private and institutional clients in the High Court of Justice, Senior Courts Costs Office, at mediation and before Regional Cost Judges, as well as within the County Courts.

Sam is able to utilise his skill and experience to undertake all types of costs work, including preparation of bills of costs, cost budgets, bespoke applications, points of dispute, points of reply, skeleton arguments, advocacy and cost negotiations, typically holding conduct of cost proceedings from cradle-to-grave, through to a successful conclusion.

He is adept at advising upon QOCS, cost budgeting, contractual retainer points and expense rate challenges, combining attention to detail, along with concise commercial advice to strive for the best possible results for clients.

He is particularly experienced at addressing cost recovery within catastrophic birth injury compensation claims, spinal matters, fatal medical negligence actions, inadequate psychiatric supervision cases and sepsis compensation. Sam has directly negotiated and compromised over £104 million of legal costs since 2020 alone, with respect to some of the most complex clinical negligence litigation, having been instructed in matters classed as truly exceptional in value and complexity.

Sam achieved a 2.1 in Politics and Public Policy from Aston University, a graduate Diploma in Law at BPP Law School and a distinction on the Legal Practice Course. He qualified as a Solicitor in 2015.
