Baby Loss Awareness Week 2020

The 9th October 2020 marked the start of Baby Loss Awareness Week 2020.  Tragically most people will either have been personally affected by pregnancy or baby loss or know someone who has.

This year, Baby Loss Awareness Week highlights the additional challenges faced by those who have suffered pregnancy or baby loss in the time of COVID-19 and the isolation that this pandemic has brought.  Some women have had to hear the devastating news of the pregnancy or baby loss alone without the presence of their partner or family.  The NHS has been under unprecedented pressure, and resources have had to be reallocated.  This has sadly meant that many people have not receive the professional support they need.

Many parents have not been able share their grief with their families because of social distancing.  Discussing pregnancy and baby loss at any time is challenging and difficult and it is avoided by many because it is so painful.  This is magnified by the forced separation and social distancing we have all had to adopt into our lives.

People react very differently to the devastating impact of baby loss.  Recently Chrissy Teigen expressed her heartbreak via social media following the loss of her baby half way through her pregnancy.  It brought into the media headlines how baby loss does not discriminate and can affect anyone.  According to the charity Tommy’s who fund research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, and provide pregnancy health information to parents, is estimated that tragically 1 in 5 pregnancies in the UK end in miscarriage.  Baby loss is not a rare complication.  It happens every day.

Baby Loss Awareness Week creates a platform for people to talk and help those suffering with a terrible loss to share their experiences.  More than this, it raises awareness of what needs to be done to reduce the number of babies dying and what support needs to be provided for those experiencing baby loss.  This week, those affected can come together to remember their lost babies and support one and other.

For those looking for support and more information, the charity SANDS offers advice and help to those affected by the death of a baby.
