Trauma-Informed Training with Survivors UK: A Valuable Session for Our Abuse Team

Last week, our abuse team had the opportunity to attend a powerful and insightful training session delivered by our charity partner, Survivors UK, who support boys, men, trans and non-binary survivors of sexual abuse. The session focused on trauma-informed care, specifically on how we as professionals can better recognise, understand, and respond to trauma in a way that is compassionate, supportive, and safe.

We explored several key principles that are essential when working with survivors, including:

  • Avoiding re-traumatisation and helping clients feel safe
  • Building trust through transparency
  • Being aware of cultural, historical, and gender-related experiences
  • Offering survivors choice and control
  • Creating and maintaining healthy, respectful boundaries

What became clear throughout the session is that these aren’t just good practices, they’re essential for ensuring survivors feel heard, respected, and empowered. The training offered valuable reflections on how we, as professionals, support clients who have been through so much.

It was also a good reminder of how important it is to look after our own wellbeing. This work is incredibly meaningful but can also be emotionally demanding. Understanding trauma helps us support not only our clients, but each other and ourselves.

The session allowed the team to share ideas, reflect on the material together, and think about how we can apply it in our work. We came away with some useful insights and practical ways to move forward.

A big thank you to Survivors UK for delivering such valuable training and for continuing to be a key part of the work we do.
