Navigating EHC Plans and school placements
The process of applying for and securing an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) for a child with Special Educational Needs (SEN) can be daunting. Parents of children with SEN are often juggling competing demands and so the challenge of obtaining an EHCP and then appealing its content, in the event provision is inadequate, can feel like one battle too far.
A further worry for parents is choosing the right school placement; somewhere their child will have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
I recorded two webinars in the summer of 2022 (access below).
The first webinar goes through the process of applying for an EHCP and then the options available to parents when a Plan is granted, but its provision or the named school placement are inadequate or unsuitable.
Once children have an EHCP, it should evolve and move through their education journey with them. A crucial part of this is ensuring the EHCP is accurate before times of transition, particularly the transition to secondary school and beyond.
In the second webinar, I set out the types of school placements available, and issues parents of children with SEN may want to consider leading up to times of transition and when visiting potential school placements.
My hope is that these webinars provide a nutshell guide to parents who are pressed for time and may feel overwhelmed by what can sometimes feel like an impenetrable process .
