Child Abuse Survivors Film

Based on the testimony of five survivors of abuse, this film seeks to inform and empower others who may have suffered similarly by sharing some real life experiences of the disclosure process. In sharing their stories, the contributors hope to help survivors make the difficult decision to disclose their suffering by talking to a police officer, social worker, doctor or charity worker for the first time. The survivors explain how taking practical steps to disclose the abuse and seek justice for it can have a positive effect on the rest of their lives.

Jonathan Wheeler, partner and head of child abuse claims at Bolt Burdon Kemp says of the film:

“I commissioned Gill Sandell of Serious Media to make this film to answer many of the questions asked of me by survivors of abuse, many of them frightened and feeling isolated, to give them access to this information without the scary prospect of speaking to a lawyer. The film is intended to explain away the myths, but to pull no punches about the problems survivors face when they start to pick up the pieces of their lives.

It was important to me that it was survivor-led, driven by real people who had gone through the processes of disclosure, talking to the police and attending court. That way, the film speaks directly to survivors, and shows that they are not alone. I am immensely grateful to our contributors, all former clients of mine, who have been so generous in sharing their experiences. I found it humbling and inspirational to watch. Gill was the right person to bring this idea to life, and she should be congratulated on producing a powerful and compassionate film which empowers and informs in equal measure. I very much hope that the film will help someone somewhere overcome their fear and their sense of isolation and start to take control of their lives.

If many start to whisper, together they’ll be heard.”
