Lives saved, families changed: BBK’s support for Air Ambulance Week

This week, Bolt Burdon Kemp are proud to support Air Ambulance Week, which shines a light on the amazing work carried out by the UK’s 21 air ambulance charities.

Every day, the crew will respond to around 130 missions to rescue people who are severely injured, providing urgent medical care when it’s needed most. In many cases, they make the difference between life and death.

Our NHS does an incredible job, but we all know the pressures it faces in treating everyone who needs help. Sometimes, paramedics face the challenge of accessing someone who is critically injured. That’s where the air ambulance steps in, providing crucial medical care quickly.

What’s remarkable is that these services are funded almost entirely by charitable donations. Their teams are highly skilled, dedicated and incredibly brave, but they can only keep doing their lifesaving work with continued support from the public.

The air ambulance is something I hold very close to my heart, as many of my clients have benefitted from their exceptional care. It’s one of those services we all hope we’ll never need, but knowing it’s there if the worst happens is hugely reassuring.

To mark Air Ambulance Week, I spoke with the wife of one of my clients. A few years ago, he was badly injured in a car accident and had to be airlifted to hospital. Their story is a powerful reminder of just how vital these charities are.

Thank you so much for agreeing to speak with me for Air Ambulance Week. Please could I ask if you could describe your experience with the air ambulance?

The air ambulance saved my husband’s life, plain and simple. His injury was so awful that witnesses thought he had died. The air ambulance arrived within minutes and did not give up on him. He owes his life to them.

It wasn’t even just the help they gave him that day. They supported our family during those first dark days, when everything came crashing down. It’s now been two years since his accident and we are still in touch with the team at the air ambulance. They check in on us, send birthday and Christmas messages and are always there to listen. It’s incredible. They must save so many people every day, I don’t know how they are able to keep in touch and support everyone. They are angels.

What would be your message to share for Air Ambulance Week?

I am embarrassed that before my husband’s accident, I didn’t know much about air ambulances. I just thought they were part of the NHS and available everywhere. I can’t believe it’s all a charity. It makes me want to shout it from the rooftops so people know to donate and support them. Without their help, I would not have a husband and my son would not have a father. The team have now become family friends. They will be in our lives forever.

Please do what you can to support them. You never know when you might need their help.
