Increase in Child Neglect According to NSPCC

The NSPCC has warned today that the increasing number of calls concerning child neglect has revealed a worrying trend.

Between April 2011 and March 2012 the NSPCC’s counsellors received over 12,000 reports, the largest number of calls regarding neglect since the helpline was launched.

Figures show that calls concerning child neglect have doubled in the past 2 years and have increased by a third in the past year alone.

According to NSPCC figures, 8600 reports to the helpline last year were so serious that they required police involvement or social services involvement.

Whilst this is sad news in this day and age, it is welcoming to see that social services are taking more action to prevent neglect of children. Last year over 21,000 children in the UK were subject to child protection plans because of the risk of harm to them from neglect and the number of care applications topped 10,000 for the first time. There has therefore been an increase in the amount of children taken into care as a result of these reports, thereby, removing them from the harm of neglect.

The NSPCC has now adopted a new approach to test local authorities as to the most effective ways of identifying, preventing and tackling neglect more quickly.
