Frimley Park Hospital apologise for Miss Jayne Cockburn’s poor care

My earlier blog highlighted that concerns have been raised about treatment provided by consultant gynaecologist Miss Jayne Cockburn at Frimley Park Hospital. There have been further developments.

We understand that Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has undertaken a clinical review of uro-gynaecological operations and procedures undertaken by Miss Cockburn and written to around 100 of her former patients. Some of Miss Cockburn’s former patients have received an apology from the Trust for the poor care they received. We understand that allegations relate to a lack of consent, unnecessary procedures and negligently performed procedures.

The General Medical Council (GMC) is investigating treatment provided by Miss Cockburn. On 19 November 2014, the General Medical Council attached ten conditions to her licence to practice. These conditions include that when undertaking urogynaecological work she must practice within the confines of a Multi-Disciplinary Team and discuss all cases with the Team before any surgical intervention.

It is very concerning to hear that Miss Cockburn was suspended by the Trust in 2011 yet former patients were not contacted until summer 2014.

In circumstances like this, it is vital that patients affected seek independent legal advice about the options available to them. We act for a number of women treated by Miss Cockburn, and have extensive experience of handling medical negligence claims relating to both gynaecological and urological treatment.

If you or a loved one are concerned about the treatment you have received from Miss Cockburn, contact us free of charge and in confidence for specialist legal advice on 0808 1593 603. Alternatively, you can complete this form and one of the solicitors in the Medical Negligence team will contact you.
