Former Deputy Head of Northgate Primary School convicted of sexually abusing pupils

Last week, Roger Caffrey, the former deputy head teacher at Northgate Primary School in Nottingham, was convicted of three counts of rape and 12 counts of indecent assault on young girls, which occurred between 1978 and 1995.

Caffrey would inappropriately touch the girls, by placing his hand up their skirts, while they read aloud in class. He would also summon the girls into a store cupboard in the classroom where he would lift their skirts and grope their bottom. The abuse eventually progressed to rape with one of the victims being raped six times at his home.

Judge Timothy Spencer pointed out that Caffrey “enjoyed a sense of complete power over the girls he abused” and “deliberately targeted” girls who he calculated would not disclose the abuse.

During his trial, one victim said: “I was scared I would not be believed because he was a teacher and I was a child. He was someone in authority who should be respected so I didn’t tell anybody”.

The jury reached a unanimous guilty verdict and Caffrey was sentenced to 17 ½ years’ imprisonment, banned from working with children and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

Sadly, this is a situation that we are very familiar with as we have acted for many clients who suffered abuse at the hands of their teachers. We have successfully brought claims against the teachers themselves, the schools or the local authorities that ran the school in question and employed the teacher. Caffrey’s victims are also entitled to compensation for the abuse that they suffered and for the impact that this has had on their lives.
