BBK salutes You during Armed Forces Week

Events have been held across the country to mark Armed Forces Week.

Armed Forces Day, which will take place on Saturday 27th June, is a chance to show appreciation and support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, which includes serving personnel and their families, veterans, cadets and reservists.

Unfortunately, a number of planned celebrations have had to be cancelled but people have still been able to get involved through social media and virtual events, including a virtual quiz hosted by the military charity SSAFA.

Details of all planned events can be found here.

The last few months have been a reminder of the incredible potential of our Armed Forces personnel when it comes to responding to national emergencies.

Our Armed Forces have played a vital role in the response to COVID-19.  Armed Forces personnel assisted in the construction of the NHS Nightingale Hospitals at the Excel centre in London and the NEC in Birmingham.  They have also assisted with mobile testing centres and supporting the work of the ambulance services, as well as transporting PPE to frontline NHS staff.  Army veteran Captain Sir Tom Moore received worldwide recognition for his fundraising efforts, having raised over £32 million for NHS charities.

It is important now more than ever that we recognise these contributions but also that we acknowledge the challenges faced by service personnel, veterans and their families.  The military charity Help for Heroes has reported a large increase in veterans seeking mental health support during lockdown.

Last month the government announced £6 million of emergency funding to support military charities which are struggling to raise funds during the coronavirus pandemic.  These charities offer a range of support services for personnel who have suffered illness or injury during their military service and those who need help with making the transition to civilian life.

Through my work, acting for military personnel who have suffered physical and psychiatric injuries, I get to hear the incredible stories of people who have given everything to serve their country.  I hope that this Armed Forces Day will give many other people the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the best of our Armed Forces and that efforts will continue to make sure its personnel are properly supported.
