Dave Lee Travis found guilty of indecent assault

Jury allowed to give majority verdict

Ex-Top of the Pops presenter, Dave Lee Travis, has been found guilty of indecent assault at Southwark Crown Court. The 69 year old was being retried on three counts of indecent assault after a jury was unable to reach verdicts on the first two charges at an earlier trial, which is part of the Operation Yewtree investigation.

The jury retired to consider their verdicts on 18 September 2014 and, after three days of deliberations, Judge Anthony Leonard QC made the direction that the jury could give majority verdicts. This appears to have broken the deadlock as today the jury found Travis guilty on one count of indecent assault.

The prosecution argued that Travis was an “opportunist” and submitted that he had put his hands inside the trousers of a woman who was working on the production of Aladdin, and groped a journalist’s chest when she went to interview him at his home in 2008. Travis was cleared of these allegations but was found guilty of indecent assault against a young woman working on the BBC’s Mrs Merton Show in January 1995.
