Why BBK is supporting Aurora New Dawn this Armed Forces Week

BBK is marking Armed Forces Week by supporting Aurora New Dawn, a domestic abuse and sexual violence charity which has developed a dedicated service for the Armed Forces community.

Armed Forces Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the service of our Armed Forces community – serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families – and to reflect on the many ways in which that community can be supported.

At Bolt Burdon Kemp, our commitment to the Armed Forces community extends beyond legal work. It is also about building relationships with organisations that are doing vital work to support serving personnel, veterans and families particularly where specialist support is needed.

That is why we are proud to support Aurora New Dawn, a specialist charity supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence and stalking.

Alongside its wider work, Aurora has developed dedicated support for the Armed Forces community, recognising that service life can bring challenges and barriers for those seeking help. Its Armed Forces service offers specialist, confidential support to serving Royal Navy, British Army and RAF personnel, as well as family members, who are experiencing domestic abuse, sexual violence or stalking.

This is important because the Armed Forces community is not immune from these issues. In fact, military life can sometimes make it harder for people to speak up or access support. Concerns about confidentiality, career impact, chain of command, family life and the realities of service can all create additional barriers for those experiencing abuse or violence. Aurora’s work recognises those realities and provides support designed specifically with that community in mind.

Aurora’s Armed Forces work includes one-to-one advocacy, recovery programmes and a specialist helpline for serving personnel and family members, available both in the UK and overseas. The charity also works closely with defence and other organisations to improve understanding, provide training and strengthen the support available to victim-survivors across the military community.

For BBK, supporting Aurora New Dawn feels like a natural and important partnership because we feel that supporting the military community should be practical, collaborative and rooted in real need.

Within our military claims team, we work closely with serving personnel, veterans and military families, and we understand that supporting the Armed Forces community means recognising the full range of challenges that can affect service life and life after service.

It also means understanding that meaningful support is not limited to one area, whether that is employment, transition, serious injury or community engagement. We support organisations that are helping people in moments of real vulnerability and ensuring those who need specialist help know where to find it.

Our relationship with Aurora New Dawn is still in its early stages, but it is already one that we are incredibly proud of and keen to build. Over the coming months, we will be supporting Aurora in several ways, including now by promoting its Big Give campaign.

Armed Forces Week is often rightly focused on celebration and recognition. But it is also an opportunity to shine a light on the organisations working behind the scenes to support members of the military community when they need it most.

If you would like to support Aurora New Dawn’s work this Armed Forces Week, please consider donating to its Big Give campaign or taking the time to learn more about the specialist support it provides to the Armed Forces community.
