Raising awareness for patient safety
We are dedicated to raising awareness and calling for changes to improve patient safety. In 2022, we made a Freedom of Information request to the NHS for information on bladder injuries and claims. To read the full press release, please click here.
Figures obtained through the request revealed that the NHS paid out over £100m in damages to over 1,000 patients as a result of avoidable bladder injuries between 2012 and 2022. The statistics show that the number of claims has steadily increased, or remained static, over the last ten years, indicating that mistakes are being repeated, and lessons are not being learnt.

Below are a few examples of cases successfully handled by our medical negligence solicitors:
Male urology cases
Testicular Torsion
Our solicitors secured compensation for our client, a young man, who needlessly lost a testicle owing to delays in diagnosing and treating testicular torsion. The compensation provided the costs of psychological support and future cosmetic surgery, loss of earnings, and semen preservation to safeguard his ability to have children in the future.
Urology Prostate Cancer – Surgical Negligence
We settled a claim for our client against his private surgeon for the negligently performed surgery for prostate cancer which resulted in his permanent urinary incontinence. Our client was not given the opportunity to give his fully informed consent, which had he done so would have meant an alternative procedure would have been carried out and the injury avoided.
Negligent Catheterisation
Our client claimed compensation for injury he sustained from a traumatic catheterisation during an unrelated surgical procedure. Our client suffered from urethral structure damage impacting on his day-to-day life with lifelong consequences, risky future surgery and an impact on his mental health, education and employment prospects.
Female urology cases
Urinary retention
We acted on behalf of our client who suffered catastrophic and lifelong urological injury following a delayed diagnosis of bladder retention following a hysterectomy. There was a failure to follow the “Trial after Catheter” pathway and to check urine input and output measurements prior to discharge. There were further misdiagnoses and delays in recognising bladder retention. Our client suffers regular urosepsis from infections and has had to endure multiple invasive surgical procedures which have done little to control her symptoms. This has resulted in significant care needs, changes required to her day to day living and her being unable to work.
Endometriosis and surgical negligence
We acted on behalf of our client who suffered bilateral kidney injuries and kidney failure following two separate episodes of negligent medical treatment by her doctors. There was an injury caused by failing to properly protect the ureter during surgery to excise endometriosis which resulted in the ureter being severed and requiring reconstruction and stenting. The other kidney later failed due to negligent mismanagement of a ureteric stent and failure to follow up. Our client is a woman with a young family and her claim included provision for loss of her earning capacity and care.
Gynaecological surgery and negligent TVT procedure
We acted for a client who received negligent care following gynaecological surgery and the management and fitting of a TVT to treat stress incontinence. The tape was fitted too tightly which led to urinary retention, further surgery being required and residual ongoing problems as a result. Expert evidence supported that a delayed diagnosis of urinary retention increases the risk of developing long term voiding dysfunction by over stretching the bladder which our client sadly experienced. Future treatment recommended included nerve stimulation and Botox injections, and we were able to recover the private costs of these for our client.
