Bonding over brain injury and beef and beer pie, Headway East London style!
Supper clubs have been gaining popularity all over London and after attending my first ever supper club at Headway East London, it is easy to see why!
Headway is a charity supporting people affected by brain injury, with branches across the UK and Channel Islands. Headway East London is located on Kingsland Road, E2 and offers support and services to over 200 survivors, family, friends and carers in the local area each week. It offers a variety of events and support groups including the regular supper clubs, which consist of a delicious three-course meal cooked by, and eaten alongside, brain injury survivors. As well as delicious food, there is also entertainment provided by Headway East London’s very own members.
The evening started with welcome drinks in the fantastic art studio, where we got to drink, chat and admire the incredible range of art work on display. From mosaics to sculptures and paintings, all the work was created by Headway East members, right there in the studio.
We then headed to the main building, which had been laid out with long tables perfect for socialising. We quickly got chatting to our fellow diners and having a great time.
As well as the lovely atmosphere, the food itself was delicious. We had a starter of pickled herring with beetroot, celeriac and apple salad with sourdough croutons, followed by beef and beer pie with mash and liquor – in true East London style! Poached pear with cashew and chestnut cream and orange and star anise shortbread was a fantastic end to the meal.
Following the traditional pie and mash, the East London theme continued with the evening’s entertainment – a (fiendishly difficult) cockney rhyming slang quiz! This was in true pub quiz style – lots of chatting, laughing and trying to guess the answers!
The evening flew by and everyone had a fantastic time. After attending my first ever Headway supper club, I can’t recommend them enough – delicious food, great company and a wonderful way to support the important work that Headway East London to help those affected by brain injury.
