Abuse by ‘UK’s worst sex offender’ ignored at Medomsley young offenders’ centre
A prison officer and caterer sexually abused nearly 400 young men while he worked at Medomsley Detention Centre, while managers turned a blind eye, an investigation has found.
Neville Husband has been described as “possibly the most prolific sex offender in British history” in the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman’s investigation which was published this week.
He was one of a number of predators at the young offenders’ centre, and has had 388 allegations of sexual abuse made against him.
Husband, who worked at the detention centre in County Durham between 1969 and 1985 used his position of authority to sexually abuse young men aged 17 to 21.
Alongside his campaign of sexual abuse, Husband also controlled access to the kitchens and used food, isolation, and threats to manipulate and silence victims.
Husband was convicted of abusing five teenagers at Medomsley in 2003 and admitted four further allegations of abuse in 2005. He died in 2010.
Prior to his employment at Medomsley, Husband was a church minister and Scout troop leader. He later went on to work at HMP Frankland and Deerbolt Youth Custody Centre, also in County Durham.
The Ombudsman said: “It is very likely that his offending did not begin and end at Medomsley.”
Despite complaints made against Husband and other members of staff over many years, the Ministry of Justice repeatedly failed to act. Senior staff either ignored reports or enabled the abusive culture to continue. The abuse took place within a regime already known for its violence and humiliation, where young detainees were told to “keep quiet” or face punishment.
For survivors, the consequences have been lifelong: trauma, shame, and mistrust of authority. This investigation is a stark reminder of the need for accountability.
