BBK charity funds accessible Mersea Island beach hut days for injured people

The Bolt Burdon Kemp Charity is helping injured people enjoy a day at the seaside after donating to not-for-profit beach hut operator Ty ‘the Beach Hut Guy’ in Mersea Island, Essex.

We are delighted to have awarded a grant of £500 to The Hut Mersea Island, helping to fund six beach hut days for people living with life-changing injuries.

The Hut Mersea Island was set up by Ty in 2022 with the aim of creating a peaceful escape where individuals and families can take a break from hospital appointments, rehabilitation and the everyday realities of living with serious injuries.

Ty understands just how important respite can be for individuals and families facing life-changing circumstances. The Hut Mersea Island was established in memory of his late brother, making his commitment to supporting others deeply personal.

So far, four of the six days have been allocated to individuals and families who have experienced incredibly difficult circumstances, including:

  • A lady recovering from major burns sustained in a house fire;
  • A mother and her teenage daughter who suffered life-changing injuries in a road traffic collision;
  • An eight-year-old child living with a spinal injury following a sports accident; and
  • A soldier injured during military service who has undergone both arm and leg amputations.

One of the huts, Mabel, has been thoughtfully adapted to make it accessible for wheelchair users, featuring a ramp, spacious decking, a beach wheelchair and a hoist. The hut is equipped with everything visitors might need for a comfortable day by the sea, from tea, coffee and biscuits to beach chairs, windbreaks and even buckets and spades. These thoughtful touches help create a true home-from-home experience.

Ty has done a fantastic job of creating an experience to help individuals and families create positive memories in a calm, welcoming environment and we are proud our grant has helped more people experience the comfort, freedom and enjoyment that Ty’s beach huts provide.

The Bolt Burdon Kemp Charity is committed to helping people who have sustained life-changing injuries and supporting their families as they rebuild their lives. Making a real difference doesn’t always mean funding medical equipment or rehabilitation – it can also mean providing an opportunity to relax, reconnect and simply enjoy a day away from everyday challenges.
