15-Year Old Girl Left Blind Following Road Traffic Accident
I was very saddened to hear about Kelly Green, the teenage girl who was left blind after an airbag inflated and hit her in the face during a horrific car crash. The car was driven by her father when it hit a pothole and collided with a central reservation, causing it to flip onto its roof. On impact, both air bags inflated. Tragically Kelly was hit straight in the eyes which such force that she was completely blinded in her right eye and her left eye was left severely damaged as well. I understand that she is pursuing a claim in negligence to seek compensation for the ophthalmic injuries caused by the accident.
Airbag contact injuries such as these are becoming increasingly common. Given that airbags are a device which are designed to increase passenger safety this is particularly sad. Airbags have to inflate rapidly in order to be effective which is why they come out of the steering wheel hub or instrument panel with such force. Usually the injuries caused are minor bruises or burns but very occasionally, serious or even fatal injuries can occur.
My thoughts are with Kelly and her family at what must be an incredibly difficult time.
