BBK supports younger stroke survivors with half marathon walk

Every year, about 100,000 people in the UK have a stroke. While many think of this as something affecting only older people, that is not the case – one in four strokes happens to  someone of working age or younger.

This is where Different Strokes comes in. This amazing charity is run by younger stroke survivors, for younger stroke survivors. They understand the challenges of life after a stroke – because they’ve lived it themselves – and their work provides vital support to young stroke survivors and their families, helping them to recover and rebuild their lives.

The Adult Brain Injury Team at Bolt Burdon Kemp has helped many younger stroke survivors secure the compensation they deserve when medical care fell short. We’ve seen how life-changing the effects of stroke can be and Different Strokes’ positive impact in empowering and inspiring younger stroke survivors.

So, we’re proud to support Different Strokes as partners in its mission, which is why we teamed up with the charity again this year to raise funds – this time by tackling the London Winter Walk Half Marathon on 25 January 2025.

13 miles, 33,000 steps, and one big goal

Braving the winter chill, nine of our brain injury specialists laced up their walking shoes and set off from The Oval Cricket Ground at 10.30am. The route took us along the South Bank of the Thames to Rotherhithe, then back to Tower Bridge.

We crossed over to the North Bank, passed Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, pushed through the fatigue and, finally, looped back over Vauxhall Bridge to finish where we started.

After nearly five hours of walking under clear blue skies in the crisp winter air, we clocked 33,000 steps and – with the support of our donors – smashed our fundraising target! Our goal was £3,000, but thanks to everyone’s generosity, we raised an incredible £4,461.

Thank you for your support!

This challenge was more than just a long walk – it was about raising awareness and vital funds for a cause close to our hearts. We’re grateful to everyone who supported us and to Different Strokes for the amazing work it does every day.
