Hema Wanza

Associate in the Child Brain Injury Team

Hema Wanza is a really talented associate, very bright and capable.

Legal 500, 2025

Specialist expertise in child brain injury claims

Hema is a highly experienced and compassionate Associate Solicitor specialising in child brain injury claims arising from both personal injury and clinical negligence. Since joining Bolt Burdon Kemp in 2020, she has developed a strong reputation for helping children and their families navigate the challenges that follow a life-changing brain injury, while securing the compensation and support they need to move forward with confidence.

Hema acts for children who have sustained serious brain injuries as a result of personal injury, road traffic accidents, birth injuries and medical negligence. She has represented clients with complex conditions including neonatal hypoglycaemia, brain abscesses and encephalitis. Working alongside leading barristers on high-value, multi-million-pound claims, Hema is dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes for her clients and their families.

Hema’s expertise has been recognised by the legal profession, with her being named a Key Lawyer in The Legal 500 in both 2022 and 2023. In 2024, she was described as:

“A really talented associate, very bright and capable.”

Supporting families every step of the way

At the heart of Hema’s practice is her commitment to supporting the whole family. She understands the emotional, practical and financial pressures that can arise following a child’s brain injury and takes a sensitive, family-centred approach to every case.

Her goal is not only to secure compensation but also to help families access the specialist care, therapies and support their child needs as early as possible. This includes supporting families to receive their own psychological support. Hema is passionate about helping parents focus on being parents again, rather than becoming full-time carers.

Securing early rehabilitation and financial support

Hema places particular emphasis on obtaining interim compensation payments at an early stage, enabling families to access rehabilitation and professional support without delay. She works closely with brain injury case managers, therapists and Court of Protection Deputies to develop tailored care and rehabilitation programmes that support each child’s recovery, independence and quality of life.

In one recent case, Hema secured a £500,000 interim payment for a child with a significant brain injury. This funding enabled the family to access a specialist case manager, professional care, and a comprehensive rehabilitation package, including speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, neuropsychology, educational psychology and dietetic support. The funding also covered assistive technology, specialist equipment and suitable accommodation for the family. To date, Hema has assisted to secure more than £2 million in interim payments for this client, ensuring vital support remains in place while the claim progresses.

Her work has helped many families relocate to more suitable homes and access life-changing rehabilitation services that make a meaningful difference to their child’s future.

Examples of settlements secured for clients

  • £9 million secured for a child who suffered hypoglycaemic seizures in the neonatal period due to failures in monitoring blood glucose levels and ensuring adequate feeding in the hours immediately following birth.
  • £4 million secured for a child who developed a brain abscess following a delayed diagnosis and treatment of an ear infection.

Supporting children with special educational needs

In addition to her legal work, Hema is an IPSEA-qualified Special Educational Needs (SEN) adviser.

She supports children and young people whose education has been affected by brain injuries, helping families secure Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and successfully representing them in appeals before the First-tier SEND Tribunal. This additional expertise enables her to provide holistic support that extends beyond the litigation process.

Involvement in the brain injury community

Hema is passionate about supporting the wider brain injury community and actively contributes to the work of charities including CBIT, Peeps and Cerebra, helping to raise awareness and support families affected by childhood brain injury.

Languages

Hema speaks conversational Gujarati, enabling her to communicate with and support a diverse range of families and communities.

How Hema can help

Whether a child has suffered a brain injury as a result of medical negligence, a birth injury or an accident, Hema is committed to helping families access the answers, support and financial security they need. Combining legal expertise with a compassionate and practical approach, she works tirelessly to achieve outcomes that can make a lasting difference to her clients’ lives.
