Help for Armed Forces if they’re injured during summer leave
Summer Leave is just around the corner and for many in the Armed Forces it’s a time to travel home, spend time with family and friends and take a well-earned holiday.
Whilst service personnel can take time off, injuries don’t take a break. Everything they’re likely to do has the potential to cause us injury or harm which can, and invariably does, negatively impact military service.
No matter how straightforward an injury may seem at the time, there is always the potential for complications further down the line. A simple broken finger now may mean an inability to hold or use a rifle in the future for example.
If an injury negatively impacts a service career, the likelihood for medical downgrading and medical discharge is a very real prospect. The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) will not compensate for injuries sustained during leave periods.
If you are injured outside the military environment whilst serving, it’s important to take legal advice as soon as possible. Time limits to make a claim apply and vary depending on where the injury happened and the age of the injured party.
To make a successful civil personal injury claim you must show it was caused or made worse – at least in part – by someone else’s negligence. This could include but is not limited to: –
- Road traffic accidents including as a passenger, driver, cyclist or pedestrian
- Theme park or adrenaline park injuries – even if a waiver has been signed
- Brain injuries
- Spinal injuries
- Slips, trips and falls
- Sexual assault
- Injuries whilst abroad
