Witness appeal – abuse by primary school teacher Mr Joseph Birtles

I represent a client who was subjected to sexual abuse by his Year 4 teacher Mr Joseph Birtles at Kensington Primary School, Manor Park, London, in 1980.

My client disclosed the abuse to the Metropolitan Police in 2012 which led the police to reopen their investigation into Birtles.  Further to the police investigation, Birtles was convicted of 15 counts of indecent assault involving seven victims between 1972 and 1984 – two counts related to my client. On 6 August 2014, Birtles was sentenced to seven years in prison for his crimes.

The abuse my client suffered at the hands of Birtles has had a profound effect on him over the years, and he is now seeking justice and closure through a civil claim for compensation in the High Court to assist in rebuilding his life.

I am appealing for witnesses on behalf of my client who may be able to assist with our investigations.  It is possible that there are more victims who have not yet felt able to come forward and speak about abuse by Birtles or at Kensington Primary School.

If you have any information in relation to Birtles that might assist my client in their pursuit of justice, please contact me directly by email: emmabarrow@bbkllp.co.uk or by telephone +447879 222029.
