Sexual abuse during medicals expose failure at heart of Armed Forces recruitment

An investigation into sexual abuse during mandatory medical examinations for recruits joining the British Army has now spread across all three services of the Armed Forces, according to reports.

Operation Pianora has exposed shocking claims that for five decades, potentially hundreds of women undergoing medicals to join the services were allegedly subjected to sexual abuse.

At Bolt Burdon Kemp, we cannot remain silent. This is a human tragedy that demands attention, accountability, and real support for survivors.

Operation Pianora shows widespread, long-term alleged abuse, across multiple locations. The scale and spread of the allegations suggest this was a systemic problem, not isolated wrongdoing; an institutional failure to safeguard recruits who trusted the system to protect them at their most vulnerable were let down.

These are not abstract statistics. They represent real people whose trust was broken, whose careers and wellbeing were impacted, and whose courage in coming forward must be met with respect and meaningful support.

The importance of accountability

Survivors deserve more than regret and more than shame, they deserve justice, care and recognition.

That means independent, thorough investigations and legal accountability for those responsible, as well as comprehensive mental health, legal and welfare support for survivors.

It also means systemic reform. Policies, training and culture must be reviewed and improved to ensure such failures cannot recur.

Silence and delay only prolong harm. Courage should never be met with fear, dismissal, or institutional defensiveness.

How to report abuse or make contact with police

Wiltshire Police, which is leading the investigation, has established a dedicated investigation team for Operation Pianora. You can submit information directly to the team through its secure online reporting system, choosing how and when you would prefer to be contacted.

Coming forward can be extremely difficult. Independent support is available if you need emotional and psychological help, specialist sexual abuse counselling, or practical and legal guidance.

Charities and organisations such as Combat Stress, Salute Her UK, Aurora New Dawn, SHERO’s, and the Survivors Trust are just a few that can offer support.

Operation Pianora must be a turning point. Beyond investigation, it demands transparency, safeguarding, and systemic change within the Armed Forces. Survivors must be listened to, believed and supported, and the culture that allowed this to happen must be confronted and dismantled.

If you’ve been affected by your service, physically or emotionally, you don’t have to face it alone.

Our specialist military claims team approaches each enquiry with empathy, respect and a genuine understanding of the challenges service personnel and veterans can face.
