Hampshire GP struck off for abuse
Former GP Mohan Babu is back in the news after being struck off the medical register. Babu was found guilty of four sexual assaults on three women when he was working in Havant, Hampshire and was jailed for three and a half years in April 2024.
It was reported that Babu targeted patients who were “significantly vulnerable” both physically and emotionally. This is a devastating breach of trust that no one should ever have to endure. A victim had told the court the assault had “ruined my life” while another said she had gone on a “dark, downward decline”.
Abuse of this kind is not only a profound breach of trust – it is a criminal offence. Survivors can report what happened to the police, and many choose to do so. But the impact of wilful neglect or ill‑treatment often extends far beyond the criminal process. It can leave lasting emotional, physical, and financial consequences. A civil claim, brought after or alongside a criminal conviction, can help survivors secure compensation to fund medical care, therapy, and other support they may need as a result of a professional’s failings.
For many survivors, seeing cases like this reported in the press can stir up difficult memories, anger, or a sense of being let down by the very systems meant to protect them.
At Bolt Burdon Kemp, our specialist abuse team is dedicated to standing alongside survivors as they navigate these difficult steps. We support people in reporting their experiences, understanding their rights, and pursuing civil claims. If you feel ready to explore your options, we are here to listen and to help you take the next step when the time is right for you.
