Former Elmbridge School teacher arrested over child abuse offences found dead

A former teacher arrested over child sexual abuse offences that allegedly took place at a boarding school in Ongar has been found dead before charges could be placed against him.

John Stagg, a former teacher at Elmbridge School in Fyfield, was arrested in 2015 in relation to allegation of child abuse, before the matter was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service who decided to charge him with five counts of buggery and eight counts of indecent assault.  Stagg was found dead before the charges could be placed.

Stagg had previously been jailed for two and a half years in 1998 for sexually assaulting pupils while he was a music teacher at one of Birmingham’s top grammar schools.  Stagg taught at King Edward VI School for Boys in Aston and encouraged pupils to go to his flat where he would ply them with alcohol and drugs and show them pornographic videos.

It is noted that another former teacher of Elmbridge School has been charged with 11 counts of indecent assault in relation to former pupils at the school.

Essex Police’s investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse has resulted in Brian Truan being charged with the same.  The offences took place between 1985 and 1988 at the former boarding school, and involved three boys who were aged under 16.

He is due to next appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on 15 March 2017.
