Doctor in court accused of 45 sexual offences against patients
A doctor has appeared in court charged with 45 sexual offences against hospital patients, including children.
Nathanial Spencer, of Hockley, Birmingham, is accused of offences against 38 female patients at Royal Stoke University Hospital in Staffordshire and Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, between 2017 and 2021.
He has not yet entered a plea.
Spencer’s charges are the latest in a long line of sexual abuse allegations against members of the medical profession. While it must be emphasised Spencer has not been convicted, we know these cases are very sensitive.
The doctor/patient relationship is sacrosanct and any violation would involve an invasion of privacy and a breach of trust which is acutely distressing.
We have many years’ experience of successfully representing victims and survivors of sexual abuse committed by doctors and surgeons.
Patients are often reticent about complaining. They question the reality of what they have experienced when sexually abused, asking ‘did it really happen?’ And if they report it, ‘will I be believed, after all surely a doctor would never do such a thing?’
We know through representing survivors that sexual abuse can happen anywhere and in all manner of circumstances.
