The quiet magic of the volunteers at Horatio’s Garden Stoke Mandeville

There is something extraordinary happening every day at Horatio’s Garden Stoke Mandeville. It’s there in the gentle hum of conversation in the garden room, in the rows of cakes on the sideboard, in the cups of tea, in the swept paths and trimmed flower beds. And at the heart of it all are the volunteers.

They probably won’t thank me for making a fuss. In fact, they’d almost certainly brush it off. “Oh, it’s nothing,” they’d say. “I just pop in once a week.” Or “I only help with the planting.”

But that’s the thing about the volunteers at Horatio’s Garden Stoke Mandeville – they don’t realise the impact of what they do. It is anything but small.

Volunteering somewhere like Horatio’s Garden is more than jet washing pathways or washing up cups. It’s about presence – showing up, consistently, warmly, and without expectation. They step into a space where people and their families are navigating life-changing injuries and bring some normality where life may feel anything but normal.

They sit and listen, chat about the weather, about football, about grandchildren, about absolutely nothing in particular. It’s ordinary kindness, like remembering how someone takes their tea, and in these difficult situations, it is so powerful. It only takes a moment for a volunteer messaging the WhatsApp group calling for gluten-free cakes because there’s a new patient who’s gluten-free but that moment can bring so much joy to someone whose whole life is being turned upside down.

Noticing when someone seems quieter than usual, or sensing when someone wants to be left alone or needs to chat is a small thing that can really affect someone’s mood.

And often, volunteers don’t see the ripple effect of their kindness. They don’t always see how someone  carries that lighter mood back onto the ward. Or how a family member leaves feeling just a little less alone. Or how the garden itself feels warmer because of their presence. But the reverberations are there.

And it doesn’t stop there. Behind the scenes the volunteers are also busy raising funds to help support the garden and the charity. From arranging lunches, climbing peaks, running races, arranging bridge events, speaking at community events, the list is endless. Last year the volunteer fundraising group at Stoke Mandeville raised over £42,937.72. That is an amazing achievement.

How do I know all this? As the Regional Partner of Stoke Mandeville myself and my colleagues spend time in the garden, sometimes volunteering ourselves. Nowhere near as often as most of the dedicated team of volunteers but through our time spent in and around the garden I have seen all of the above. I have watched the faces of people  sitting alone light up as a volunteer sits down and asks how they are. How a passing comment turns into a conversation and suddenly the room is filled with laughter. So to all those wonderful volunteers at Horatio’s Garden Stoke Mandeville I say a huge and heartfelt thank you for every second you spend in and around the garden. You are all amazing people.
