Emma Ferguson

Emma is a Solicitor in the Abuse Team, having joined the team in May 2019. She specialises in bringing claims on behalf of survivors of child abuse.

Emma completed her training at a large national firm where she acted exclusively on behalf of claimants. She has dealt with child abuse claims against social services, individual abusers and religious institutions as well as against schools and local authorities. Emma prioritises client care and has received positive feedback for her tenacity and commitment to her clients’ claims.

Before beginning her career in law, Emma worked as a children’s nursery nurse, caring for children aged six  months to four years. Her role as a nursery nurse inspired her interest in child protection, having spent several years on the front lines in detecting signs of physical and sexual abuse and neglect of children.  Emma is particularly passionate about child safeguarding and the importance of educating children about consent and bodily autonomy from an early age.

Emma is the secretary of the APIL Junior Litigators Group, which provides a platform for junior lawyers for learning and discussion about various legal issues relevant to their everyday practice.

Emma studied Law at King’s College, London, where in her spare time she campaigned against sexual harassment and assault on campus and engaged in social mobility programs in local schools. She won the Serjeants’ Inn Chambers Medical Law prize for her dissertation on the threat to safe, free and legal access to abortion in the UK. Emma went on to complete her Legal Practice Course at the University of Law, in which she gained a distinction.

  • 'Initially I was wary of getting involved in litigation.  I'd heard it could take years and I worried it would rake up painful memories for my family and I;  However, Flora, our main contact at Bolt Burdon and Kemp was clear, efficient and genuine from the beginning.  Bringing this case against the medical team responsible gave us a more positive way of dealing with this and will now help us make a life for our child.  I would recommend Bolt Burdon Kemp and particularly Flora without hesitation.

  • "Throughout my legal case I have received a highly professional service at all times. Given the nature of my occupation working for the Royal Navy, Philippa and her team have been considerate and extremely understanding. Her knowledge on Her Majesty’s Forces employment and terms of service are beyond reproach. Bolt Burdon Kemp have consistently provided advice in a manner that is understandable, accurate and reliable. Communication has been maintained both electronically, verbal and written. This communication has always been appropriate to my personal understanding of the legal system. This has permitted me to make informed decisions without pressure or uncertainty. I have always felt that my legal team are available to be asked questions on proceedings without feeling out of place... I cannot recommend Bolt Burdon and Kemp solicitors enough and more especially Philippa Tuckman and Tracy Smith."

  • Just want to say a big thank you for all the time and effort you have put into this case for me. I probably wasn't this easiest person to work with due to being away etc and again I thank you for your patience. Its been a pleasure and I'm very happy that I was pointed in the direction of Bolt Burdon Kemp.
