The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) held the first Women in Spinal Cord Injury Award’s night on Thursday 7th June 2013 at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

As a trustee of the SIA I am very aware of the importance of early rehabilitation for spinal cord injuries and the need to recognise the impact of this specialised support, which is often provided by female healthcare professionals who go the extra mile.

With this in mind I was delighted to form part of the committee set up to put together the Women in Spinal Cord Injury Awards.

The awards focused on the ten spinal cord injuries centres across the UK, which are substantially staffed by female healthcare professionals.

We wanted to celebrate the difference women make to the treatment, care and lives of spinal cord injured people, as well as the achievements of spinal cord injured people who have gone on to campaign or fundraise for the spinal cord injury community.

As a result of discussions on daytime programs and raising awareness on local radio, the event was a great success for all involved and brought the very real issue of spinal injuries into the public arena.
