Venables: 'guilty' or 'not guilty'

July 23, 2010

Jon Venables, the boy convicted of murdering toddler, Jamie Bulger in 1993, is due to appear at the Old Bailey today via video link. Venables is required to enter his plea, in relation to the two charges that he faces under the Protection of Children Act 1978. Venables was given a new identity in 2001 upon his release from prison and this latest decision to reveal the court date raises even further moral questions: has his safety been jeopardised? What about his anonymity? I will be keeping an eye on his plea, not least because, 'not guilty' will mean that he is likely to be tried by a jury for the offences.
