Attended this meeting today which provided invaluable insight into how the spinal injury centres around the country operate and liaise. Evidence demonstrating the importance of someone who sustains a spinal injury receiving treatment in a spinal injury centre rather than in a district hospital was overwhelming. Studies show that your ability to integrate back into society increases substantially if you are treated by specialists and have recourse to specialist facilities. I was also able to see what work the SIA are doing in providing support to those who are newly injured and the schemes they are in the process of implementing such as the Community Peer Mentors.
