Protective headgear for cricketers?

The much anticipated Ashes are starting tomorrow in Cardiff. After reading about the sad death of Alcwyn Jenkins, the umpire who died after being struck in the side of the head by a cricket ball, I wonder if it will ever be compulsory for all cricketers to wear protective head gear. I am sure some people will cry that this is health and safety gone mad but when you think about the fact that these balls weigh up to 163kg and travel at speeds of over 100mph, I think this should be considered.
