Neglect of the elderly can lead to compensation claims

I am dealing with a number of cases involving negligent care provided to elderly patients.
As the population ages, more of us will need to be cared for in nursing homes, and we would all hope that the elderly would receive a good standard of care. Whether they are being cared for in nursing homes or hospital, elderly patients have specific needs that need to be taken into account by the healthcare provider.
In particular, the elderly can be at risk of developing pressure sores / ulcers. Age, reduced mobility, dehydration, incontinence and impaired mental state are all predisposing factors for pressure sores. Healthcare providers should assess individuals using a risk assessment such as the ‘Watrerlow Score,’ which is the most frequently used system in the United Kingdom. This involves giving a ‘score’ for various risk factors such as weight, age, appetite and special risks. The total ‘score’ is then used to assess the overall level of risk.
When patients are at risk of developing pressure sores, the hospital or care home should take steps to minimise the likelihood of sores developing. This can include providing a pressure relieving mattress and regularly turning the patient.
Failure to assess a patient’s risk of developing pressure sores, or failure to minimise the risk can amount to negligence. Patients that develop pressure sores will often suffer extreme discomfort, and require considerable care to treat the wounds.
I am dealing with several compensation claims on behalf of patients and the families of patients that have developed pressure sores whilst being cared for in nursing homes or hospitals. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss bringing a claim for this type of injury.
