Anyone who hasn’t read George Macdonald Fraser’s Flashman books really should. The first one is very relevant just now. Apart from being very funny, it’s about a war in Afghanistan. The British aren’t quite sure why they’re there, and the Afghan opponents seem undefeatable. At least, though the British diplomats regularly announce a victory, the enemy comes back again and again.
