Irish Church reports horrific child abuse

A new series of reports into the Catholic Church in Ireland, published on 30 November 2011, have revealed details of horrific acts of child abuse by priests over the last 35 years. They have also highlighted the failings of the Roman Catholic Church in dealing with the abuse, even as recently as August 2010.
The reports indicate that across 6 Irish Catholic dioceses, over 160 allegations of abuse were made against 85 priests, leading to 8 convictions. It is expected that the number of allegations will increase in the future given the length of time that it can take for the victims of abuse to report their abusers to the police.
