The Metro has reported that compensation has been paid by the NHS to the family of Malcolm Drake, a father of one aged 23 from Stoke-on- Trent, who died in December 2007. He visited his GP six times with his symptoms, and also attended the A & E department at North Staffordshire University Hospital when he became unable to walk. The locum GP who diagnosed him with a groin strain sent him home.

Three days later, on Christmas Day, he was found dead. A post mortem confirmed that he died of blood poisoning from a bowel abscess.
