Adrian Underwood, 42, from Selly Oak, Birmingham, was referred by his GP to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre in July 2000.

There he underwent a series of tests, including a CT scan, but when a senior consultant saw Mr Underwood in March 2001, the scan was not reviewed and he was diagnosed as suffering from migraines. When his health worsened and his vision deteriorated in December 2004, he referred himself to the Birmingham Eye Hospital where another scan showed a benign tumour. The growth, which was around the size of a large lemon, was then removed during surgery at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The details of the out-of-court settlement by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has not been revealed but Mr Underwood said he hoped lessons would be learned from the case.
