Cyclist suffers severe head injury

A motorist has just been sentenced to 8 months imprisonment for running over a cyclist, after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. The cyclist, Patrice Gougam, was the head tennis coach at his club and a cycling enthusiast, but he sustained a severe head injury in the accident.

The driver admitted to driving with a medical condition, as well as leaving the scene of an accident and failing to notify the DVLA of his eyesight problem. He had been having treatment for glaucoma and cataracts and he should not have been driving as his vision was impaired. I find it surprising that the court only banned the motorist from driving for three years as it reinforces the perception that the right to drive is more important than the safety of cyclists.
