Councils cannot afford to repair pot holes in roads

Councils face a shortfall of £900million to get their roads back into a reasonable condition, figures show. Apparently one in four local roads in London and one in five local roads in England are in a poor condition. Councils say they need over £10billion to repair the pot holes in England and Wales. Colin Loveday the chairman of Asphalt Industry Alliance said: “..filling potholes when they appear is 20 times more expensive than planned preventative maintenance”. When you also consider the cost of paying compensation for personal injury claims, surely then this is another example of poor management of tax payer’s money. Three quarters of drivers in England believe potholed roads have got worse in the last three years. I have to agree.
