Careless Drivers Cause Injuries

In the news this week, two separate incidents have been reported where victims have been killed or seriously injured by drivers who have had eye conditions affecting their sight but have continued to drive.

The first is a case of a cyclist who was struck by a motorist and suffered a near fatal brain injury. At the time of the accident, the motorist was being treated for glaucoma and cataracts and should not have been driving. The motorist said that he did not see the cyclist. As a result of the accident, the cyclist was in a coma for three weeks and now requires round the clock care, is fed through a tube and uses a wheelchair.

The second incident concerned a 16 year old pedestrian who was killed by an 87 year old driver who drove into her as she walked along the pavement. The driver had been in a previous minor collision only three days earlier and the Police had requested that he hand in his licence to the DVLA as he failed a sight test. The Police do not have the power to confiscate or suspend a driver’s licence in theses circumstances and the mother of the pedestrian has now started a petition to change the law so that any unfit driver can be immediately suspended from driving.

These two tragic accidents clearly show how people’s lives can be affected by the negligence of others. Both accidents could have been avoided.
