A small step for man, a great leap for... facebook!

A solicitor in the UK has served a court summons on a debtor using Facebook. She exhausted all available means before applying to the Court for permission to serve by facebook, after proving that the debtor was a frequent visitor to the site. The summons was for the debtor to attend court to give further information about their means. It is the first time the site has been used in this way in the UK and shows that the courts are willing to embrace technological advances in cases where other traditional routes have already been exhausted. This could be the first of many such applications to the court. A word of caution though - solicitors had better check they are serving the correct person, otherwise this could lead to a raft of professional negligence claims.
