Manny Helmot, 39, suffered severe trauma and brain injuries when he was hit during a training ride in 1998. He permanently lost the use of his right arm, has double vision and needs 24-hour care. His mother has had to give up her job to care for him and the family home has needed modifying. The brain injury impaired his judgment and moods, and he will never be able to work, drive or ride again. His guardians, mother Rose Helmot and her partner Ken Jordan, won a claim in January for £9 million but the figure is now £14 million after an appeal. His compensation beat Britain’s record injury claim of £11 million, made in March to Wasim Mohammed from Walsall, after he was paralysed in a car crash. The compensation will be paid in a lump sum and the Court of Appeal has ordered insurance company Tradex and its re-insurers to pay interest on the amount backdated to January.
