Work accident results in firm fine

January 03, 2008

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has successfully prosecuted a Stirlingshire building firm, who were found to have lax worker safety standards which led to a work accident.

Hadden Construction was fined £2,500 at Stirling Crown Court, following a January 2007 injury suffered by worker Robert Bone in a work accident when he fell from scaffolding.

The 25-year-old, whose wounds were described by the HSE as "severe", was found in court to have been working on a platform on which parts were missing - constituting a hazard and this led to the work accident.

Firms who show similar disregard for worker safety put themselves at risk of prosecution and work accident claims for compensation from injured workers.

HSE inspector Isabelle Martin commented: "It is important that those responsible for managing construction sites maintain the scaffolding to ensure that there is a safe working platform at all times.

"Scaffolding must be regularly inspected - at least weekly - to ensure that it remains in a safe condition."

Hadden was prosecuted under the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974. More information about making a work accident claim for compensation.
