Professional negligence claims on the rise

Compensation claims against negligent solicitors are on the rise again according to solicitors who defend professional negligence claims. Whilst it is not yet clear whether the rise in claims is due to the recession, a report from one city law firm that cases are up 158% is difficult to ignore as a trend. The concern is that solicitors are “dabbling” with practice areas they are unfamiliar with as a consequence of a drop off of instructions in their traditional areas such as conveyancing. Unfortunately this is likely to include professional negligence claims themselves leading to a second generation of compensation claims for some unfortunate clients.
