Lawyers caught 'helping terrorists' in newspaper sting

December 31, 2007

Corrupt lawyers are aiding potential terrorists in gaining entry to the UK, according to an investigation from the News of the World newspaper.

Lawyer Mohammed Uddin handed over a fake passport to an undercover investigator to let an extremist into the country - and also discussed plans to defraud banks in order to fund terrorist attacks.

The newspaper says it has passed its dossier of evidence on Mr Uddin and four other lawyers at several East London firms to police.

This could lead to the advocates being prosecuted on solicitor negligence charges and being struck of the solicitors' register.

Mr Uddin told an investigator, who sought immigration advice: "Brother, I understand your problem. You are completely illegal in this country but I can help you.

"If you have money to pay I can arrange everything for you."

The solicitor offered help despite being told that the investigator was on the run from police having been arrested for funding terrorism.
