Knee surgery patient considers compensation
December 07, 2007
A knee surgery patient is considering seeking compensation after the operation has left her suffering severe pain.
Maureen Nielssen, of Redcar, has been left unable to continue working as a carer because the pain in her knee has now become so severe, she has told the Redcar Gazette.
The 55-year-old underwent an operation to trim cartilage at Northallerton's Friarage Hospital in July, but following the keyhole surgery was told that the scissors had broken and a small fragment now remains in her knee.
"The consultants have said that as far as they are concerned it is safe to leave it there. But it's causing me problems," she said.
She is now aiming to sue the hospital trust for negligence, explaining: "I still can't walk properly, I have a limp and I can't even climb the stairs properly. Because of that I've left my job and I'm on incapacity."
