Fixed penalty fines for bad drivers who cause road traffic accidents

May 12, 2011

Bad drivers, who tailgate, undertake and cut up other drivers will face £100 fixed penalty fines in a new push to cut deaths from road traffic accidents. The new strategy will mean that offenders will not be taken to court, they will instead be handed the fine instantly. Other measures to cut road traffic accidents include increasing fixed fines of £60 for offences such as using a mobile phone while driving. Courts will be encouraged to make more use of their powers to seize vehicles for the most serious traffic offences. Disqualified drivers will be forced to retrain and possibly take another test before they regain their licence. Retraining and education courses will be offered for less serious road traffic offences. It is hoped that the measures will cut road deaths from road traffic accidents by up to 57% within 20 years.
